Understanding the ritual
What is Mahamrityunjay Jaap?
The Mahamrityunjay Mantra from the Rigveda is addressed to Tryambaka — the three-eyed one — the very form worshipped at Trimbakeshwar. It asks not for the avoidance of death but for release from the fear of it, and for nourishment and healing while life continues.
The jaap is counted in multiples of 108. A sava-lakh (1.25 lakh) jaap performed by a group of pandits is the traditional prescription for serious illness, surgery, accidents or a difficult planetary period, and concludes with a havan of one-tenth the count.
Families most often request it when a member is in hospital, when a Sade Sati or Mahadasha of a malefic planet is running, or as protection before a long journey or a major life change.
When performed with faith and sankalp, this jaap is also a wish-fulfilling anushthan (manokamna siddhi) that helps all heartfelt desires and aspirations come to fruition.

How the ritual is performed

Sankalp in the patient's name
The jaap is dedicated by name, gotra and nakshatra — the person need not be present.

Sava-lakh jaap
Pandits recite 1,25,000 repetitions of the mantra in shifts.

Dashansh havan
A tenth of the count is offered into the fire, followed by purnahuti and tirth.
