त्रिपिंडी श्राद्ध

Tripindi Shraddh is a Kamya Shraddha — a shraddh performed with a specific wish, here the peace of ancestors who have gone unattended. It is prescribed when the annual Pitru Shraddh has not been performed for three years or more after a death in the family.

The ritual offers pind to three generations at once and addresses the three gunas — satva, rajas and tamas — in which an unsettled soul may be held. Ancestors who remain in this state are said to express their unrest through the living family rather than through any harm.

The signs families describe are consistent: quarrels that flare without cause, children whose education or marriage keeps slipping, chronic illness in the household, or a run of years where nothing quite settles. The shraddh is performed at the Godavari, where the offering is considered complete.
