Narayan Nagbali is really two rituals performed together over three days, and the shastras prescribe it only at Trimbakeshwar. Narayan Bali releases ancestors who died unnaturally — by accident, illness before their time, or by their own hand — and therefore never received gati.

Nag Bali atones for the killing of a serpent, knowingly or unknowingly, anywhere in the family line. In tradition the cobra is a form of Shesha, and the sin attaches to the lineage rather than to one person, which is why the family keeps meeting the same wall generation after generation.

Families usually come after years of unexplained trouble: no children, sudden losses in business, illness that moves from one member to the next, or a persistent feeling that the house is not at peace. The three mornings are physically simple but must be done in the correct order and on permitted days.
